Tips For Hiring a Qualified Plumber in Austin
Have you ever wondered why plumbers are so expensive? What training do they go through? How does the state track their licenses to ensure only qualified plumbers are working in your area/home? These very valid questions will help you understand not only some of the costs but why it’s so important to hire a qualified plumber to work on your home.
Do Plumbers Need to Be Licensed?
The State of Texas requires plumbers to be licensed. A lot of times, however, a company cannot guarantee a specific plumber because emergencies happen. If that’s the case, before they start working on your home, you can require them to show you their license (which they must carry with them at all times).
Texas requires all plumbers to go through at least 8 hours of training per year so that they are up-to-date with all current municipality code changes. You wouldn’t want someone to work on your natural gas water heater who has not been taught proper venting techniques, would you?
Is Training Required?
The state also requires technicians to have hands-on training in their chosen field. In order to progress through each level of training, the employee has to put in thousands of hours of hands-on training under a Master licensed plumber’s supervision, as well as additional training if subjects such as OSHA protection. Plumbers are required to publish their license number (M-40822) on all advertising/documents provided – if they cannot provide this information to you, it is best to look for someone who can.
Do Plumbers Need to Have Insurance?
A qualified plumber or plumbing company in Austin will be required to carry insurance on their company, employees, vehicles, equipment, etc. This means that, should something happen, the company will have proper coverage to ensure your home is well cared for.
Is There a Set of Rules a Plumber Must Follow?
A qualified plumber should also do all work to “code,” meaning they work within the governing municipality guidelines to pull a permit, do the scope of work, and all necessary inspection visits.
For example, just because the scope of work involves the water heater does not mean that the city inspector will be limiting their inspection to strictly the water heater. They will be inspecting to ensure your home or business has proper air/gas venting, backflow prevention on your hose faucets to keep contaminants out of your clean/drinking water, necessary safety alarm equipment in case of any gas leaks or fires, and more. These are just a few of the items that Austin plumbers are required to assess when doing a job for a customer.
Should Plumbers Provide Job Estimates?
A qualified plumber will always provide you with on-site pricing before a job is started, as well as consult you if any changes are required to complete the scope of work prior to continuing their project on your home. A qualified plumber is one who can help you with any job, from a clogged sink to a clogged main sewer line. They can flush a water heater for you or replace it. They can help you remodel your bath or kitchen. They will go above and beyond to help you maintain your home sewer lines or quickly handle a plumbing emergency.

How Important Are Customer Reviews?
It is important to do your research by reading reviews from other consumers who have used the plumber before. An honest plumber in Austin will always be able to direct you to their reviews page. Do you see a lot of positive reviews?
